Article Review ONE: The general issue in this paragraph relates to the lack of impartiality when it comes to the selection of a juror for a trial. Potential jurors exposed to publicity prior to the trial form opinions about the victims and defendants. TWO: Whether the defendant is attractive or not has an impact on whether the jury will rule for or against that defendant. The bottom line is that attractive defendants generally get a better deal from juries because of the belief that good-looking people are more likely to have socially acceptable behaviors. The nature of the alleged crime determines whether or not the attractiveness of the defendant is influential in the verdict. THREE: When it comes to jurors passing judgment based on the appearance of the defendant, jurors that share common physical characteristics with defendants tend to be lenient towards that defendant. There can be positive biases in female jurors towards attractive male defendants but that isnt the case with males judging other males or females. Now please, buy our products. † South Park attempts to do something beyond just simple parody of our consumption and violence. Trey Parker and Matt Stone attempt to create new meaning out what we have already viewed. The very meaning of the parody is derived from what you already know of the target of ridicule. This is what Jerkiest and Fiske refer to as intellectuality. They attempt to relate the Simpson to this dynamic but I believe this realm is where South Park is actually operating. The Simpson may use this intellectuality when playing with genre, but South Park uses it when conveying the very meaning of the parody. Even this season alone, South Park had covered the topics of social media sites Like Faceable, celebrates and sex scandals and the hypocrisies of the media concerning such events, and marijuana legalization debate. All of these topics are lampooned by critiquing the media’s covered and both sides of the social and political debate on TV. You have to be critically aware to understand the finer points of South Parks humor that lies beneath the crude language and crass Jokes. Birth or Death? or Neither? â€Å"I should be glad of another death,† says the speaker in the last line of â€Å"Journey of the Magi,† written by T.S. Eliot. In the first stanza of the poem, the speaker describes a cold winter, such a long, hard journey through the roughest of grounds (3-5). Even the camels are exhausted and sore-footed (6). The speaker continues to describe the events which make this journey questionable. For example, there is a lack of shelters, unsanitary conditions in the villages and a lack of friendliness among the residents in the towns and cities (13-15). As the journey proceeds, they decide to travel all night and sleep in shifts in hopes of reaching their destination quickly (17-18). They arrive at a valley and believe they have reached their sight (21). It is wet and smells of vegetation (22). It even has a running stream, a water-mill, trees and an old white horse (23-25). These are all conditions of a civilized and peaceful environment. However, when they arrive at a tavern which appears to contain lifeless individuals who have no information this allows them to determine that they must move on and continue their journey. The speaker states that, after this long journey, they finally arrive at their destination and are there to witness a birth. He then questions the worthiness of it all and compares it to his own death. The speaker has seen both birth and death as stated in line 37 although he does not fully understand. He accepts the fact of birth but is perplexed by its similarity to this death, and to death which he has seen before. Step 1: Start With A Social Media Content Audit Are you headed for a championship season? Or, do you feel like you're entering a rebuilding year? Analyzing your current situation will help expose gaps and  highlight strengths. This will give you a clear picture of what to stop, start, and continue. Which Social Media Channels Are You On? This seems like an obvious question. It's still worth asking, though. Your brand may have abandoned social media accounts you've forgotten about. Follow these steps: Inventory all your channels. Note which ones are active and any that are stagnant. Search for any that may have been abandoned. Do you have multiple accounts on any channels? Merge them (or delete duplicates). Tips For Selecting Social Media Channels Understanding each channel's strengths can help you understand if they're right for you. Pro Tip: Not every social network may be right for your brand. What Types Of Content Will You Create And Share  On Each Channel? Here's a simple overview of which types of content you can create across the social media spectrum: After reviewing the content types for each network, ask these questions: Which of these types of content am I currently creating? Which types is my strategy missing? Do I need additional resources to do any of these well? (eg: design software, video equipment, etc.) Who Will Be Creating Content For Your Company? You need a good team to win. Build yours by determining the following: Who will write social media content? If I don't have a designer, how will I create graphics? Do we have the capability to shoot video? Step 2: Set Social Media Goals Once you've audited your social media presence, it's time to set goals. We can break these down into two categories: Business Objectives: These are the overarching business goals you hope to advance through social media. For example, "increasing brand awareness" would be a business objective. Social Objectives: These are goals you'll set specifically for social media. For example, "increasing our Twitter follower count" would be a social objective. Using your template, list your top business objectives and social objectives: Then, establish clear and specific goals to reach these objectives: Need insight into how to set goals and measure your progress toward them? Do your homework.You're probably aware of who your competition is. Well, at least some of your competition. There could be an upstart you've never heard of. Or, an existing business might be expanding onto your turf. In any case, social media can be a great way to find out who these  interlopers are. Repeat this process on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and any other network where you have an active presence.  This will likely return a mix of companies you know and some that aren't relevant. Set Up Google Alerts for Industry Keywords Make a list of keywords related to your brand and industry. Set up a Google Alert for each keyword. What can I do better?  Notice someone doing something moderately well (or even poorly)? Think what you would improve. Then, do it. What can I do differently?  Stand out from the crowd. Figure out how you can put a unique spin on what others are doing. This can be as simple as expressing an opinion contrary to what's popular on a given topic. It could also mean putting a fresh spin on an old tactic. Then, find the People tab in the left-hand navigation. Here, you'll find valuable information about your audience demographics. Use Google Analytics to Analyze Your Blog or Website's Demographic Data Google Analytics is an excellent resource for learning more about your audience. Start by logging into your account. Then, head down to the Demographics tab: Here, you can find basic information about your audience's age and gender breakdowns. Let's check out the Interests area next. First, click on Interests. Then, head down to Affinity Categories: This will tell you which topical categories your audience is interested in. This is useful information to have when crafting content (both on social media and elsewhere). Next, click on In-Market Segments. This section tells you which other markets and industries your audience researches. Step 5: Establish Your Brand Voice Tone Once you know who you're talking to, it's time to figure out how to speak with them. This means establishing your brand voice and tone for social media. Establishing brand voice is important for maintaining a consistent tone and messaging across social channels. How do you make your voice suit best practices on each network while staying consistent? That's the problem we're about to solve. Is your brand voice pulling your audience in, or pushing them away?Monitor Discussions On Social Media What kind of language do folks in your industry use on social media? Listen to your audience. Try to keep your tone and word choice within a relatable context for them. Choose Three Words Or Phrases To Summarize Your Brand These can be related to: Product benefits Brand personality Your purpose or mission Think About How Your Audience Views Your Brand Why do your customers choose your product? Bobcat Company does an incredible job of engaging their audience across social media. They do this in part by maintaining a consistent brand voice and speaking to the needs and interests of people who use their machines. 3.  Arby's No one digs deeper to speak to one specific audience than Arby's. Lots of people eat fast food, right? Well, when your audience is that broad, it's easy for your messaging to become so diluted that it effectively interests no one. Defining Marketing Essay To answer the premise of the paper, ‘Defining Marketing’ a definition of marketing is a proper beginning for consideration. My personal definition of marketing is the concept or premise of a function in which products, goods or services are transferred to a consumer or client by a producer or seller. Other definitions exist to describe marketing aside from the prior definition. Marketing has been described as, â€Å"A management process identifying, anticipating and supplying client or consumer requirements with efficiency and profitability. (Tutor2U, 2010) In that same article marketing is described as â€Å"human activities that are directed at facilitating and consummating exchanges. † (Tutor2U, 2010) This last expression or definition rings true, in that as a consumer I want appeal, product or name recognition, quality, and value for my money. The sellers or producers are engaged in making a profit and ensuring a positive client experience and consumers or clients who want products that are within their budget, durable and meets the expectations of the transaction; thus a deal can be made between the two entities. In the course text, Basic Marketing, by Perrault, Cannon and McCarthy, the term marketing is further defined as â€Å"performing activities seeking to accomplish an organizations’ objectives through the anticipation of customer needs and directing the flow of need satisfying goods and services from producer to client or customer. †(Basic Marketing, page 6, 2009) Marketing is important for organizational success along with companies having flexibility, exuding a transparent organizational culture and challenging employees to excel and remaining accountable for their actions. Many companies and organizations struggle to find the right balance in management to ensure the company growth and achieve profitability. Marketing can plan an important role in companies excelling with their corporate goals. The use of marketing is how companies conceive and promote corporate brand management and strategic positioning; but it also works toward a corporate strategy and allows for companies to be innovative and thrive in their industries. From Teacher to Computer Although Vaughan was encouraged by her professors at Wilberforce to go to graduate school at Howard University, she declined, instead taking a job at Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia, so that she could help support her family during the Great Depression. During this time, she and her husband Howard had six children: two daughters and four sons. Her position and education placed her as an admired leader in her community. Dorothy Vaughan taught high school for 14 years during the era of racially segregated education. In 1943, during World War II, she took a job at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, the predecessor to NASA) as a computer. NACA and the rest of the federal agencies had technically desegregated in 1941 by executive order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Vaughan was assigned to the West Area Computing group at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Despite women of color being recruited actively, they were still segregated into groups separate from their white counterparts.   Nasa.gov The computing group consisted of expert female mathematicians who dealt with complex mathematical calculations, nearly all done by hand. During the war, their work was connected to the war effort, since the government firmly believed that the war would be won on the strength of air forces. The scope of activity at NACA expanded considerably after WWII ended and the space program began in earnest. For the most part, their work involved reading data, analyzing it, and plotting it for use by the scientists and engineers. Although the women- both white and black- often held degrees similar to (or even more advanced than) the men who worked at NASA, they were only hired for lower positions and pay. Women could not be hired as engineers. Supervisor and Innovator In 1949, Dorothy Vaughan was assigned to supervise the West Area Computers, but not in an official supervisory role. Instead, she was given the role as acting head of the group (after their previous supervisor, a white woman, died). This meant the job didn’t come with the expected title and pay bump. It took several years and advocating for herself before she was finally given the role of supervisor in an official capacity and the benefits that came with it. Vaughan did not just advocate for herself, but also worked hard to advocate for more opportunities for women. Her intention was not just to help her West Computing colleagues, but women across the organization, including white women. Eventually, her expertise came to be highly valued by the engineers at NASA, who relied heavily on her recommendations to match projects with the computers whose skills aligned best. In 1958, NACA became NASA and segregated facilities were completely and finally abolished. Vaughan worked in the Numerical Techniques division and, in 1961, shifted her focus to the new frontier of electronic computing. She figured out, earlier than many others, that electronic computers were going to be the future, so she set out to make sure she- and the women in her group- were prepared. During her time at NASA, Vaughan also contributed directly to projects on the space program with her work on the Scout Launch Vehicle Program, a particular type of rocket designed to launch small satellites into orbit around the Earth. Vaughan taught herself the programming language FORTRAN that was used for early computing, and from there, she taught it to many of her colleagues so they would be prepared for the inevitable transition away from manual computing and towards electronics. Eventually, she and several of her West Area Computing colleagues joined the newly formed Analysis and Computation Division, a race- and gender-integrated group working to expand the horizons of electronic computing. In 1971, Vaughan finally retired at the age of 71. She continued to be active in her community and her church throughout retirement, but lived a fairly quiet life. Vaughan died on November 10, 2008 at the age of 98, less than a week after the election of America’s first black president, Barack Obama. Vaughan’s story came to public attention in 2016, when Margot Lee Shetterly published her nonfiction book Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race. However, in a simple term stigma are classed as being represented for persons who are usually excluded from society due to a condition they themselves did not choose or over which they may have little control over, thus suffer from existential stigma; such as sexual identity, mental retardation or even in such cases, marital status. Moreover, there are other cases whereby a person may experience some sort of achieved stigma to which he or she have somehow contributed to their inclusion in a stigmatized group. Such form of stigma could range from homelessness, immigration, achievement or prostitution. Unsurprisingly, many of us fall into at least one of any categories (some not mentioned) yet no one seems to be accepted from association of some stigmatized group. In sociology term Erving Guffman described stigma as an attribute, behaviour or reputation which is socially discrediting in a particular way. Guffman also defined the meaning of the word stigma as a special gap between vital social identity and actual social identity. Guffmans meaning on vital social identity relates to the way we represent ourselves with people we dont see and for is take on actual social identity he explains it as the way we deal with people in real life. Social Stigma Guffman named abomination of the body (physical deformities) as a character (dishonesty, mental disorder, and homosexuality) tribal (race, sex, religion) as the three types of stigma. In the case of abomination of the body people living with the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) are venerable to stigmatisation; this is because our society has built up our perception to live in fear and to regard such virus as a fatal sin. Unsurprisingly, in this modern day people live in the fear that being around someone living with HIV virus enhances the chances of them being contaminated by them. Some have the belief that the virus is contagious by being around or sharing a cup from the person affected with the virus will virus. Generally the forms of stigmatization usually associated with HIV are groups of people such as homosexuals, ethnic minority such as Black people and drug users, as they believe such groups are the ones who carry the virus around due to the kinds of activities they pursue or the way they live their lives. Possibly in some case you may find that are person within this group requiring medical assistance for whatever reason leads to negative impacts towards their care and health. In some cases you may find that individuals that are infected with the virus are more often shun by families and friends, forcing them to move from their home and sometimes suffer from physical violence or in some extreme cases are even murdered. Unfortunately this is quite evident in third world countries, whereby HIV patients may encounter difficulties and are denied health care, employment and the ability to move from one country to another. In such situation, this fear of stigma causes those affected to ignore sickness test to determine whether they are affected and require treatments, consequently deciding to remain silent about the virus, leading to them being denied the essential treatment and social care. In the long run they eventually deteriorate painfully. Mental Stigma Drug addiction, alcoholism impressments are mental illnesses that relates to all part of the character of being stigmatised. This is down to the individual being dishonest. Personally I believe the media plays a vital role in people suffering from mental illness in to being stigmatized, as I am lead to believe they allow it to happen through the negative views they air out to the public. For people that suffer this mental illness really goes out of their way to commit gruesome crime, whilst a majority of mental illness patients live a quiet and peaceful life others experience something of an unimaginable life, which merely cause them to their death. We learn about this disease in rare cases when a person may decide to discuses their experiences with others. Within some families this is kept as a taboo, as to not allowing other families to discover that a member of a family suffers from mental illness whether it be alcoholic or any other forms of mental difficulty. Such situations are avoided due to what is said or written in the media that becomes their perception of what mental illness means. Whenever we hear about gruesome crimes being linked to mental illness we tend to gain a stronger stigma surroundings mental illness. It is also common for people with this disease to be an easy target for criminals as mental illness interferes with the sufferer ability to socialise with people, thus leaving them unaware, vulnerable and careless of their surroundings; not forgetting homeless. At times such stigmatised group may experience difficulties of having no access to jobs, education and sometimes even a home. As Bill Clinton once said mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all Physical Stigma Tribal is another form of stigma, which can be in the form of race, sex or religion. A good example of such stigma would be the albino race for instance; a hereditary condition caused by the lack of pigmentation (melanin) which leaves the skin whiter. As like Black (and other ethnic minorities) may experience some form of stigmatisation within their lifetime. Albinos, just like many other races may usually find it difficult, living within society. Sadly, albinism in Africa for instance is widely regarded as a form of deformity, for reasons that are non-explanatory. Living as an albino in such country is horrifying, as such race are treated like outcasts, and are made to feel as an underdogs; unable to find jobs. Undoubtedly they are made to feel unwelcome in such community and are very much rejected by their own people. Living in Africa, in many cases you will mostly find albino women end up being single parents because, as most man in some African countries believe in the perception that albino women will have albino children, and also believe that by sleeping with an albino woman they will end with the HIV virus for some reason or another. Which is why you will most likely find albino women dropping out of school due to the immense discriminated, therefore in many cases they may end up selling fruits in the streets due to the lack of education they may have received. As you can imagine, albino children find it hard adjusting to school life, as they are frequently picked upon, cursed at and most times ends up at home with no education to look forward to. Albinism in Africa is regarded as a curse from God (BBC News), a type of stigmatisation that sometimes leads to an unimaginative future as an individual. Physical stigma Obese individuals face different forms of discrimination and prejudice, one of the mostly commonly known stigmatisation. Men as well as Women are faced with such condition due to the way they look as suppose to an average size body, whereby usually in some cases a diet is regarded as a cure to overcome such physical deformity. People suffering from such stigmatisation would tend experience refusal of being hired on a job, and in extreme cases being told to pay for two (rather than one) seats on an airline in order to travel. Attitudes of obese people have become more stigmatised, so much so that people feel it is one that can be excused, of telling someone they are worthless because of their weight. Stigmatizing on weight has become so common that someone has even commented on the heavier a person is on an airline means that that they require more fuel to take the required weight. Unfortunately most people never seem to realize that a weight of a heavy person is linked to uncontrolled heath problems, but usually have a strong belief that it is due to the persons fault; and the person lacks exercise and eats far too much than required. An obsess individual experiencing stigma would no doubt go through life being referred to as either ugly, unattractive or awkward and that it is the personal responsibility of the individual of not being in such a way . Unknown to most, such stigma leads to the obsess individual of gaining even more weight due to the intense stress such person way go through, and by this I mean; they way find that the lack of courage may enhance such weight to be added on. You would usually find that the higher a persons body mass is then the less respect they may gain from society, some would even go as far as telling you that sitting next to an obsess person is a shame and a sickening though because they are perceived as unclean and smelly people, who are unable to wash and look after themselves. No matter what anyone may think, fat stigma affects everyones health, fat, thin or in between. Recently a story was told of how an overweight teenage girl whose school was going through a wellness campaign. Hallways were plastered with posters saying Prevent teenage obesity. After the posters went up, the girl said, schoolmates began taunting her in the halls, pointing at the obese girl on the posters and saying, Look at the fat girl. The moral to this story is that heavier girls at the school were now made to feel conscious about what they consumed, yet the thinner girls were able to eat there choice of lunch without the aid of some snide nasty and disrespectful comment, even if the lunch were similar to the children deemed to be the heaviest. Stigmatization gave the thinner children permission to think theres something wrong with the larger children, which doesnt help them look at their own health habits either. In Goffmans theory of stigma he distinguishes three categories; the own, the wise and the normal (Guffman 1963). He describes the own as a group that represent stigmatized society. the wise in Guffman term are people who assign stigma and feels that life is better to them with few complains. Whereas the normal are people with empathy towards others and therefore help them fit into society.
