Alcohol and Energy Drinks- A literature review Essay Essays

Liquor and Energy Drinks-A writing survey Essay Essays Liquor and Energy Drinks-A writing survey Essay Liquor and Energy Drinks-A writing survey Essay ? In late mature ages. research laborers have started to focus going to on a rising propensity of eating up vitality assimilate grouped with intoxicant AmED. Utilization of AmED is thought to hold a correlativity with terrible conduct and negative consequences for the purchaser. A few examination articles have analyzed the different parts of this example. A portion of the purposes of thought that have been explored incorporate the intentions behind eating up AmED. the impacts of eating up AmED on intoxicant ingestion and the likeliness of indicting in peril taking practices in the wake of eating up AmED contrasted with liquor completely. This writing reappraisal will break down the undermentioned four articles with an end goal to investigate this nation of exploration. Caffeinated drinks will be drinks that gloat the capacity to flexibly the purchaser with an expansion in vitality. Caffeinated drinks regularly contain enormous totals of caffeine. The upper day by day suggested limits for an adult in regards to caffeine is XXX. Levels of caffeine can be up to 300mg per working. A 6oz java contains 100mg. The caffeine from caffeinated drinks is known to hold an invigorating outcome on the sensory system. Many exchange names of caffeinated drinks contain additional synthetic concoctions including plant-based incitements ( guarana and yerba mate ) . The outcome of these on the natural structure is non acceptable comprehended as there has been little exploration. Straightforward sugars, for example, glucose and natural product sugar are other than found in some caffeinated drinks. Other potential fixings incorporate glucronolacteone ( an obviously happening metabolite ) . aminic acids ( taurine. carnitine and creatine ) . herbs ( Ginko Biloba and ginseng ) and nutrients. In an exploration paper by Peacock and Bruno ( 2012a ) . types of use and intentions behind the ingestion of AmED were inspected. The point of convergence of this test was to break down the thought process of members to eat up AmED through self-announcing procedures in the signifier of an on-line survey. The example of 400 members matured 18-35 mature ages who had allegedly expended AmED in the previous a half year. The outcomes of the review showed that 75 % of members utilized AmED for enthusiastic aims. 50 % inclusion utilization to extend their stay at an open district. 60 % guaranteed they were propelled by situational fortunes. for example, grouped beverages joining ED. 40 % detailed sharing AmED with a companion. 20 % utilized AmED to mask the soul of intoxicant. 50 % of the example detailed using AmED to hold greater cheer and just 33 % revealed devouring AmED to gain progressively rummy Peacock Al et ( 2012a ) . In add-on to gustatory sensation and situational grounds. the members in this overview gave off an impression of being propelled by useful and libertine outcomes. Only a little figure of members being spurred by the longing to build the level of intoxication or experience comparative impacts to stimulate drugs. A review led by O’Brian. McCoy. Rohdes. Wagoner and Wolfson ( 2008 ) . where by reactions from 4. 271were recorded by means of an electronic report. Members who expended AmED in the previous 30 yearss detailed eating up altogether increasingly intoxicant in an average soaking up meeting each piece great as portraying more guzzling Sessionss than the individuals who did non eat up AmED O’Brian et Al. ( 2008 ) . AmEd buyers other than detailed scenes of hebdomadal intoxication and among the example who announced eating up AmED an individual soaking up meeting expended 36 % more than understudies who didn’t non portray ingestion of AmEd. The outcomes of Peacock et Al. ( 2012b ) demonstrate that despite the fact that danger taking practices happened during Sessionss of ingestion of both intoxicant and risk taking conduct that happened with AmED was factually not exactly the peril taking practices that happened in intoxicant alone Sessionss. Anyway ingestion of AmEd ensued in higher negative physiological and mental outcomes than those announced from eating up intoxicant. Verster. Aufricht and Alford ( 2012 ) . led a reappraisal of articles of articles partner to the ingestion of AmED. It was uncovered through a survey of various correlational surveies that there are by and by insufficient sufficiently controlled surveies to pull any ardent choices sing the impacts of AmED. Choices came to in their investigation were that only a minority of the student populace once in a while expends AmED Vester ( 2012 ) . Examination other than recommended a few grounds that AmED may follow in an expansion in certain aspects of liquor initiated open introduction harm. There is no reliable grounds that intoxicant modifies apparent degrees of harming. no grounds that ingestion of ED causes an expansion in liquor ingestion. no immediate grounds exists to recommend that ED is connected to medication and intoxicant dependance or abuse. A character inclined to higher degrees of peril taking conduct might be the essential ground for expanding intoxicant and medication abuse and that AmED might be a constituent of that way of life. The writing accessible partner to AmED ingestion is insufficient. Before long there is a lacking total of grounds to relate the ingestion of AmED to an expansion in peril taking conduct. expansion in ingestion of intoxicant or negative consequences for wellbeing. To comprehend the genuine impacts of AmED farther exploration is required. To pull progressively solid choices about the result of AmED there is an interest for increasingly intricate and modestly controlled clinical surveies should be embraced. Examination structure needs to investigate associations with an inside fit plan whereby the connection between the utilization of AmED and the ingestion of intoxicant is farther investigated and recorded.

The Fool in William Shakespeares As You Like It Essay -- William Shak

The Fool in William Shakespeare's As You Like It The idiot is one of the principal character prime examples that any understudy of writing figures out how to dissect. Notwithstanding his apparently light or even inconsequential prattle, the numb-skull for the most part figures out how to express some genuinely significant things. Upon further investigation, the understudy may see that it is a direct result of his affinity for absurdity that the blockhead is offered leave to communicate even hostile realities about different characters. What occurs, however, when one blockhead experiences another? Nitwits are not used to being dependent upon one another’s mind; this experience of being held up to a kind of mirror is commonly saved for the characters who must experience some change to promote the plot. Touchstone and Jaques figure out how to defy that norm, and just by coinciding appear to contend. Both satisfy some piece of our desire for the simpleton, however neither figures out how to fill the job totally. Which one comes nearer is an issue deserving of some discussion. In her book The Fool: His Social and Literary History, Enid Welsford gives a section to â€Å"The Court-Fool in Elizabethan Drama† and quickly talks about As You Like It explicitly. She at one point depicts tricks as being â€Å"†¦partly inside and halfway outside the activity of the drama.† (244). This thought is material to Touchstone and Jaques, however in a marginally unexpected route in comparison to she planned it. She was portraying characters set by situation in that liminal state- - characters with no longing to move to either side of their center ground. Likewise, she depicts the contrasts among Touchstone and Jaques, both in appearance and disposition. Above all, she makes reference to that Touchstone â€Å"†¦exposes gesture; however he is proficient of†¦criticism, and his decisions are r... ... infringing on his region. Jaques is a kind of imbecile in a kind of court, however Touchstone’s nearness acquires a flicker of the remainder of the worldâ€a genuine idiot from a genuine courtâ€that breaks Jaques before he ever gets an opportunity to toss a solitary stone at Touchstone. Jaques’ endeavors to discover a spot for himself, at that point, just read as a weird, lost man making faces in a glass. It is extremely unlikely that Jaques can outperform Touchstone’s inborn liminalityâ€where Touchstone slips flawlessly starting with one world then onto the next, all through the activity, Jaques just bounces jerkily to and fro like somebody strolling on hot coals. He never arrives in any one spot sufficiently long to truly set up himself. It is therefore that Touchstone fills each feature of the fool’s job more capably than Jaques, up as far as possible when Jaques takes the conventional fool’s closure and remains solitary.

On-The-Job Training and Things to Master

On-The-Job Training and Things to Master On-the-job training is exactly what it implies: obtaining training in a normal working setting or situation. This training is obtained through direct instruction and supervision, where the employee (the trainee) undergoes one-on-one instruction with someone who knows how the work is done, at the workplace or the actual site of the job.On-the-job training, or OJT is what usually takes place in order to teach a newly-hired employee how to accomplish his tasks and assigned activities, and it begins the moment they have been introduced to the company. You may also find OJT applied when there are major changes within the organization, such as change in staffing, policies, operations, or promotions. © Shutterstock.com | goodluzIn fact, each individual is a recipient of direct instruction. From the moment they are born, and well into their childhood, they will be learning directly from their parents or guardians. This is considered to be the most basic example of direct instruction and, in a way, OJT (even if its not really a job, not in the business or career sense). In this guide, we explore 1) why on-the-job training is great for bringing employees up to speed, 2) the two types of OJT, and 3) what employees and employers should master with regards to on-the-job training.WHY ON-THE-JOB TRAINING?Over the decades, various training methodologies have been introduced and used, but one of the most commonly-used is still OJT. In fact, even large companies and multinational corporations adapt this training method and integrate it in their human resource management programs.OJT is a preferred practice, for many reasons. Let us take a look at these reasons, which are also considered the benefits or advantages of applying OJT.OJT is easy to arrange and manage. There is no need to look for experts outside the organization, or coordinate with various parties for the conduct of the training. All it takes is a person who knows the task and how to do it, and it can start from there. The person providing the instruction will be directly responsible for the person being trained, and the whole training process, which takes a load off the managers mind.OJT has the benefit of being realistic. After all, it takes place on site. This is not like in the usual classroom setup where the instructor will spend hours talking about theories and concepts, painting the picture of the place where these concepts will be applied. There will be none of that here, because they are already in the actual place where the concepts are going to be put to use. There is no longer a need for the trainee or employee to imagine, because he is already physically present where the work takes place.OJT is inexpensive to implement. Unlike other training methods, OJT does not require the use of special equipment and materials other than what are already available and currently in use on the job. This means that the company will also be spared the expense of paying often costly professional fees of trainers.OJT will save the company a lot of money in the long run. OJT is, fundamentally, an investment on the companys manpower, and it is an investment that is worth making. Manpower turnover costs a lot of money, because the company will have to spend on frequent conduct of recruitment and training every time employees quit after working for the company for only a few months.OJT improves the companys reputation, both as an organization and as an employer. As an image booster, the general public and the industry will look favorably on the organization if it is able to prove that it provides excellent training for its staff. As a recruitment tool, it will also enable the company to attrac t talented jobseekers.OJT is very good for employee retention. In a survey, 40% of employees who are newly hired into companies and receive poor or no training tend to quit or resign even before spending a year with the company. This means that companies lose 4 out of 10 employees. It may be mostly due to low job satisfaction, when employees feel that they are not growing or developing professionally.Overall, it is safe to say that OJT helps the company grow. However, OJT is not without its imperfections. It is widely accepted and frequently used, yes, but that does not mean there are no issues.Assigning an employee as trainer or coach for the OJT means having to rearrange or rework schedules to make room for the training. For example, if the chosen trainer used to devote 8 hours working in the production process, it may be cut down to half, or less than half, because they will be spent training a new employee. Similarly, the resources that should have gone 100% into the production process may also be taken out, for training purposes. The company may have to put up with low productivity. OJT programs can take up a lot of productive time. Companies hire new employees, partly because they are in urgent need of manpower. If the new hire is focused on being trained, this means that he will not be able to put in 100% of his efforts. The new employee is still in the learning process, so he wont be expected to put in what the company expects of him. At least, not yet. Also, this has the tendency to push management to shorten the training period and administer the OJT hastily.Errors and mistakes may be committed. In fact, expect that they will be committed. The trainees are bound to make mistakes in the production activities. The quality of the products or goods that they make may also be low. If they make mistakes, this means that there may be additional rework costs. Worst case scenario: there is also the risk that the trainees will suffer injuries or accidents durin g the learning or training phase.[slideshare id=41349587doc=otjtraining-141110070023-conversion-gate02w=710h=400]TWO TYPES OF ON THE JOB TRAININGOJT can be classified into two types, depending on how it is carried out.Informal OJTIn this type of training, the set up involves the new employee learning from a more experienced employee. They could have sit-down sessions together, where the experienced employee will talk and discuss with the new employee, often using a casual approach. Often, it also involves the new employee shadowing the experienced employee, following him around as the latter shows firsthand how the job is suppose to be done.Formal OJTThere are cases, especially in large and established companies, where training programs are institutionalized. Pretty much all employees hired into the company will be required to go through this prescriptive program before they are left on their own.OJT: WHAT EMPLOYERS SHOULD MASTERNot all companies are experts at conducting on the job training, however. There are others that are better at it. What makes the difference, you ask?In all likelihood, it is because they have better OJT programs in place. After years of implementing these programs, they are able to master a few things.Technical aspects of the job.Trainers should know the job inside and out. Employees will feel more inspired and motivated to learn from someone who they know is an expert or highly experienced in the job they are training for.A new carpenter will be more motivated to learn how the process works if he is to train under the tutelage of a master carpenter in the company. A new programmer will also feel more positively toward training when he knows he will be getting it from someone who has been doing programming for a long time, and have shown great results and accomplishments to date.Consistency in integration of OJT.According to training expert Jeff McLanahan, the most difficult part about combining learning and working, and integrating the two for the new employees to learn their everyday work, is consistency. In order to ensure consistency, organizations are encouraged to make OJT one of its many core values. This is so that the company can commit to it fully and enhance it, from conceptualization to implementation. This will also prevent them from finding reasons to cancel or not go through with scheduled OJT sessions. This implies that the company needs to prioritize employee learning and development. The reasoning of many employers who do not subscribe to this philosophy is that, during the recruitment process, they have already selected the person who they know can do the job, or is an expert at it.However, expert or not, new employees that are coming into a new work environment will still require training, no matter how short it will be.Assignment of trainers. The company should have a fine-tuned trainer’s training program. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the OJT, the company should first focus on honing the training capabilities of the managers and supervisors. After all, they are the ones who will be conducting one-on-one mentoring and coaching with the new employees who will require training.Choosing trainers should not be limited from among the managers alone. Employees should also be trained to train their co-workers. They may not be of a higher position or authority, but the longer time that they have worked on the job equipped them with the necessary knowledge and experience to be able to teach new employees. In fact, many may prefer having employees teach their co-workers, so that the managers will still be able to focus or concentrate of overseeing or managing, instead of dividing their time between supervising and doing their respective tasks. Some new employees may also feel more comfortable getting instruction from a peer, since they might be intimidated being trained by a higher-level supervisor. The trainers need to be trained how to train. The teachers need to be taugh t how to teach. Therefore, the job description of managers and supervisors should include training, coaching and mentoring.Conduct of interactive hands-on training. The conventional way of learning is through the classroom-style approach. It works, but times are changing, and more and more employees and workers prefer a more interactive approach, one that lets them learn hands-on. In a study, 33% of respondents showed preference over hands-on learning, while only 19% still favor taking the classroom-style approachEmployers should be able to easily combine the two approaches, in order to obtain the best results. They should be able to successfully blend the classroom-style with the interactive hands-on style, for a richer and more effective learning experience. Adapting to changing learning circumstances.Employees have different preferences on how they want to be trained. The company needs to take this into consideration so they can tailor the training method or approach to use. Durin g the recruitment, the employer may already have an assessment on the capabilities of the new employee for learning. If the employee shows great aptitude for assimilation and can learn quickly, the training may be done at a fast pace. However, if it is the opposite case, the training should be tailored to match his pace. The training approach will also depend on the type or nature of the work that the new employee will be trained in. Manual work, for example, is more easily assimilated using the hands-on approach. Meanwhile, there are jobs where classroom-style lectures and discussions would suffice, because they may be purely theoretical in application. Jobs in areas such as finance, marketing and sales, on the other hand, may require a combination of the two styles. There is also a need to consider the industrys best practices, new technologies, and new applications. These will have an effect on how the training structure will go. Even if the company has established an OJT program, i t should be done in a way that it remains flexible, able to adapt easily in the face of evolution and change.Fostering good employee relationship and teamwork. The company should also master promoting and fostering teamwork among its employees. This is common sense, really. If organizations want their goals achieved, then they should make sure that all members share the same determination towards attaining those goals. It is the same in the context of OJT.Employees who are able to work harmoniously together will be more willing to help each other out, especially if there is a new employee coming in. Managers will feel more positive towards providing training, even if it is a job requirement on their part. Employees will not begrudge sharing their knowledge and expertise, because they know that training the new employee will help them and the company as a whole.Mastery of training tools.Employers also often use various tools and technologies to facilitate the training process, and thi s means that they should also master the usage of these tools and technologies. This can also go with the trainers training, where the managers and employees will be tasked to do the direct instruction of the new employees.Mastery of the above points may be gained by the company by considering the following tips when implementing or conducting its on-the-job training program:Repetition. If you want to inform an employee about something, you can tell him about it once or twice. If you want to train him and help him become an expert at it, you have to do it more than twice. In fact, you may have to repeat it several times in order for the employee to assimilate and fully understand the information. There are some employees that are quick learners; they can get the hang of it after being taught only once. However, not all employees are able to do that.Ask questions. In this setup, the experienced employee is like a teacher, and the new employee the student. In order to see whether the student understood what is being taught, the teacher conducts tests and examinations. This is similar to that. It will also aid the new employees memory recall of what he has learned so far.Encourage questions. Allow the new employee to ask questions, instead of doing all the talking from beginning to end. He may have something to clarify or verify, and hes only hesitating out of fear that the trainer will think he is incompetent for asking. Put him at ease and encourage him to inquire about anything related to what is being taught.Teaching over time. Learning and teaching takes time. You cannot expect to be able to teach the new employee the ropes overnight or in one work day. Repetition of instruction alone will last for several days, even weeks. The danger of speeding through the instruction is that the new employee may be overwhelmed and feel pressured, so that he may quit before the end of the OJT period. Or he may push himself to learn what he could, but will suffer burnout.Ev er wondered why training your employees at all? See how training effects your bottom line. OJT: WHAT EMPLOYEES SHOULD MASTERAt the end of the OJT duration, the employee is expected to have learned how to do his job and accomplish it properly and productively. He should also learn and master the following:The technical aspects of the jobIt is not enough for the employee to learn how to do the basics of the job; he has to master doing the job. Granted, it may be too much to ask, considering how the employee is still new in the workplace. However, since the OJT is conducted on a one-on-one basis, it is expected that he should, at least, know more than the basics. This is so that the employee who trained him will be able to let him work on his own with confidence.ProfessionalismBy obtaining training in the actual workplace, in real time, and exposed to other workers and members of the organization, the new employee can early on learn how to behave and act like a professional. Professiona lism pertains to how an employee conducts himself at work, from the way he presents himself to how he acts in certain situations. Most people associate professionalism with looking smart or dressing properly for work. That is not all there is to professionalism, however. It also refers to how the new employee respects and uses time. Punctuality will put him in a favorable light, because it gives the impression that the employee values his work enough to show up on time.Another sign of being a professional is by leaving personal matters at home. If you are in a bad mood due to an incident at home, you should not bring this mood with you in the workplace, since it is likely to affect how you carry out your work. If you committed an error or mistake, own up to it. Apologize if you must, and find ways to rectify that mistake.Communication skillsAs early as the training period, the new employee should work on his communication skills. At first, he may be primarily communicating with his c oach or mentor, but in the course of the training, he will be exposed to other people in the workplace.Be polite and courteous when dealing with others. Choose your words carefully so you can convey your message without offending anyone.Interpersonal skillsThe new employee may be a newcomer, but he should keep in mind that he will be working with everyone in the organization for the long, indeterminate future. Avoid gossiping about other people, and offer help when you can.The on-the-job training setup may not be the perfect training methodology, and it may not be the most effective or efficient either. However, it has been known to provide results where other methodologies were not able to. When done right, and when it is tailored to the specific circumstances surrounding the job, the employee and the organization, everyone is sure to benefit from it.

The History Boys free essay sample

Beyond the immediate, beyond being a play about coming of age and the value and nature of education, The History Boys is a play about the complexities and difficulties of being a human being. Bennett goes to lengths to explore and understand the trials and tribulations of his characters, and allow his audience too to understand the character’s troubles. It would appear Bennett’s goal is for his audience to learn and develop an understanding and empathy, not only for his characters, but also for humankind and to appreciate the intricacies of human nature. One of the most obvious examples here is the character of Hector who, being a man of ‘studied eccentricity,’ whose lessons are engaging and humorous and whose generally cheerful outlook make him an immediately likeable character. However, this view of Hector is challenged extremely early on when it is discovered he has a tendency to molest his students as they ride pinion with him on the way home from school. We will write a custom essay sample on The History Boys or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This leaves the viewer in an uncomfortable situation; one cannot help but like Hector though, at the same time, one does not wish to sympathise with a teacher who gropes his pupils. Unable to fit him into convenient boxes marked ‘Good Guy’ and ‘Bad Guy’ the audience’s views are challenged. This is furthered when Hector is called upon to explain himself, when justifying his actions to the headmaster, he says that the ‘transmission of knowledge in itself is an erotic act’ which makes it so much more difficult for the viewer to justify their affinity for Hector, here he seems selfish, vain, it is as if he is trying to say ‘any contact with me is the â€Å"transmission of knowledge,†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ ‘any contact with me is an â€Å"erotic act. †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This conversation has a significant effect on the reader. It demonstrates that Hector is deeply flawed as a character. Though this serves to make him a more well-rounded character, more developed, it does not detract from the issue of morals, in Mrs Lintott’s words, ‘a grope is a grope’ and motivations aside, it is simply unacceptable. So why does the audience still sympathise with Hector? When he is fired for his crime, because it is a crime, we feel he has been wronged. Well that’s just it. By presenting us a character who is so easy to like and yet so enormously flawed, Bennet demonstrates that is the nature of people that they cannot be seen simply in terms of good or bad but that Hector, like everyone, is a shade of grey. This idea of people as shades of grey is seen again in Irwin, whose feeling for the character Dakin demonstrate how different his word is from his deed. Irwin has been, thus far, a supremely confident character, who knows exactly what it is he wants to say, who will turn around and convincingly explain that the fourteen foreskins of Christ is a good subject on which to base an essay, but who, when confronted with life, reveals himself to be a nervous and uncertain character. During the scene where Dakin asks him ‘for a drink’ we see a side of Irwin yet unseen, his sentences are short and hesitant, he does not formulate an argument. While this can be largely attributed to his apparent sexual inexperience, especially when compared with Dakin, though equally it is important to realise that he is simply not that character he originally seemed, that his boisterous and know-it-all appearance was a facade to hide a real Irwin who does not have to courage to live as recklessly as his teachings would have you believe. Once again this incongruity between what he preaches and his practice make him a believable and developed character, one who the audience can sympathise with, especially as some could argue the insensitive, arrogant and ‘amoral’ Irwin we have seen previously does not invoke any sympathy from the audience. Once more, by presenting us with characters as real as we are, Bennett encourages his audience to empathise with people and understand the messiness of who we are. Finally, a third character who embodies this idea is dear old Posner. From the beginning, Posner is shown to be something of an outsider to the lives of the other boys, Posner notes that because he ‘was late growing up’ he is ‘not included in this kind of conversation’ here referring to a conversation between Dakin and Scripps about being groped by Hector on the bike, combine this with his poignant and often darkly humorous and self-depreciating lines and the audience cannot help but sympathise with him. Which means that when we learn of Posner’s future, at the end of the play, it bears all the more impact.

The Many Cognates of Cede

The Many Cognates of Cede The Many Cognates of Cede The Many Cognates of Cede By Mark Nichol The word cede and words with the syllable -cede share an origin with other similarly spelled words that in some sense refer to withdrawal. This post lists and defines those terms. Cede, meaning â€Å"assign,† â€Å"grant,† or transfer, is just one of multiple words descended from the Latin verb cedere, meaning â€Å"go† or â€Å"yield.† The term cession, which refers to an act of ceding, or yielding is rare. Concession is more common in that sense; the verb form is concede, and concessional and concessionary are the uncommon adjectival forms. (â€Å"Concession stand† and the plural form of the noun describe business operations in which one party grants another party the right to sell goods on the first party’s property.) Accede (â€Å"go to†) means â€Å"agree,† â€Å"approve,† or â€Å"consent,† with the sense of doing so reluctantly, or â€Å"take an office or position,† and the noun form is accession. To intercede (â€Å"go between†) is to intervene or mediate; the act of doing so is called intercession. Precede (â€Å"go before†) can refer to being ahead of or in front of, earlier, or more important. The noun form precedence applies to the quality of priority; another noun form, precession, is rare but is seen in â€Å"precession of the equinoxes,† a reference to an astronomical phenomenon. To recede (â€Å"go back†) is to move away or slant backward, or to decrease (it can also mean â€Å"give something back to the former owner†); most references to the noun form recession pertain to a general decline in economic prosperity. Recedence is a rare term for the act of going back. To secede (â€Å"go apart†) is to separate, as part of a nation from the whole; the noun form is secession. Several other words share the root -cede, but with altered spelling, such as proceed (â€Å"go before†), which means â€Å"advance,† â€Å"come forth,† or â€Å"continue.† The noun procedure describes a set of steps, or a way, to accomplish something, and proceeding can be both a form of the verb or, in plural form, a noun describing a sequence of events. The noun proceeds refers to money brought in, and procedural serves both as an adjective and as a noun describing a work of written or recorded fiction that focuses on a sequence of procedures such as the steps taken in solving a crime. Two other nouns derived from proceed are process, a synonym, as a verb, of proceed and, as a noun, of procedure (in addition, the noun process refers to a prominent part of an organism), and procession refers to a forward movement, especially an orderly, often ceremonial parade of people. (It can also be a verb referring to such a movement.) Processable and processability, meanwhile, refer to the capability or suitability of something to be processed. Succeed (â€Å"go after†) means to do well (and the act of succeeding is called success), but it also pertains to inheriting from or following another person in order; this action is known as succession, and one who follows is a successor. To exceed (â€Å"go from†) is to go beyond or extend outside of or to be greater than; excess refers to the act of going beyond but has a negative connotation. Words that don’t seem at all related but are include abscess (â€Å"go away†), which refers to pus collecting in a cavity within inflamed tissue, and ancestor (â€Å"one who goes before†), which means â€Å"one from whom one is descended†- the adjectival form is ancestral, and the noun ancestry refers to one’s forebears- and antecedent (â€Å"go before†), which means â€Å"something that precedes.† To cease (â€Å"hold back†) is to stop (and cessation refers to the act of stopping), and decease (â€Å"go from†) means â€Å"death,† though it is much more often used as a verb to mean â€Å"die.† (One who dies is a decedent.) Predecessor (â€Å"one who goes before†) refers to someone who has preceded another person in a position; it is an antonym of successor. Necessary (â€Å"not go†), too, derives ultimately from cedere; it means â€Å"inescapable† or â€Å"required.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Development of Nationalism in East and Southeast Asia Essay

Development of Nationalism in East and Southeast Asia - Essay Example In terms of East and Southeast Asia, critics assert that nationalism is the process that gave rise to different nationalist movements in the region in the twentieth century. The aim and objective of these movements was to rebel against the colonial ideologies of the West.Nationalism is considered to be a process, which develops with respect to time; it does not emerge abruptly or unexpectedly. â€Å"It is not a phenomenon that appears suddenly. It is the result of a process by which a people become conscious of themselves as a separate national entity in the modern world, a process by which they become willing to transfer their primary loyalty from the village, or the region, or the monarch, to the nation-state† It is this perspective, which can be found in East and Southeast Asia. In order to integrate nationalism, several steps and measures have been adopted by the government. These measures include the suppression of opposition, the selection of a mutual language and the co ncentrate on economic growth in order to sustain and maintain liberty. Nationalism and Communism in Southeast Asia is the product of colonisation. The vast majority of the East and Southeast Asian countries were â€Å"controlled either by the British, French, Dutch, Americans or Portuguese, who sought to control unnatural boundaries and had no regard for the natives of those areas† After the end of World War II, majority of the East and Southeast Asian countries declared independence from the Western imperialist. For instance, Indonesian nationalists fought with the Dutch in order to get their independence. Philippine got it independence from United States; Vietnam got its independence from France after the Indochina war. In Vietnam, the French did not have the ability to withstand Vietnamese nationalism and thus, they adopted repressive strategies in order to control it3. Majority of the Vietnamese nationalist’s politic leaders and activists were jailed. Furthermore, opposition from Vietnamese nationalists made the French to remove them from government positions and to create hurdles and obstacles in their education4. Communism is considered to be movement, which concentrates on changing the social and political structure of the society. The change is brought by creating a society in which there is no class difference among the citizens, they can freely access the goods they need and wage labour and private property concepts are disregarded1. Frequently, nationalism and communism have crossed path. For instance, the civil war in China was between these two beliefs, which concentrated on controlling China. The Chinese Civil War started in 1947 and lasted for a period of three years. China was divided into two parts; Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China. The fifties witnessed Communist China, which had gained full control of mainland China4. During the struggle for independence in Vietnam, Vietnamese nationalists fled to China, where they were ignored. However, they provided assistance to them once they realized the advantage of Vietnamese nationalists; they could be used to spy the Japanese military activities in Vietnam. In the year 1945, â€Å"the Emperor Bao Dai abdicated to Ho.   Ho Chi Minh then formed a provisional government with himself as its president and Vietnam declared independence on 2nd of September, in the year 1945†1. During this time, the Americans feared the expansion of communism and thus, provided military

Lord Rama as a Leader in Ramayana

Lord Rama as a Leader in Ramayana LORD RAMA AS MARYADA PURSHOTTAM- A LEADER IN WAR AND PEACE, AS NARRATED IN RAMAYANA Israelmore Ayivor has said, â€Å"True leaders are like statues, whether it rains or it shines, they never bend their necks to look backwards! They never run away from challenges!†[1] Lord Rama is one such leader who is also known to be the avatar, incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Swami Vivekananda has described the immortal character of lord Rama in these words, Rama, the ancient idol of the heroic ages, the embodiment of truth, of morality, the ideal son, the ideal husband, and above all, the ideal king, this Rama has been presented by the great sage, Valmiki.[2] Shri Ramchandra exhibits exceptional qualities of religious behaviour and therefore is fondly termed as ‘maryada purushottam’. Maryada meaning the inner moral principles, ethics, customs or rules and Purushottam relates to being the best amongst all men. He personifies the highest of human values, never deviating from the virtuous path in thought, or action, even in the most critical situations. He has shown many qualities of a righteous king and a noble human being. His model behaviour and conduct made him a leader par excellence and that is why he is popularly termed as Maryada Purushottam (perfect man). Transformational leadership and lord Rama. The transformational leadership has been long demonstrated by Lord Rama thousands of years ago before the introduction of this concept and model by Burns (1978)[3] and latter by Bass and Avoilio (1994)[4]. Burns emphasized on the mutual process between a leader and a follower, wherein each one makes an effort to increase the other’s level of motivation. In the first book (Bala Kand) itself, the qualities and characteristics of Rama as a true leader have been dealt with in detail, which resulted in acquiring love, admiration, respect, and trust of all the people of Ayodhya. He as a transformational leader inspired his followers to imbibe his values and connect with his ideologies. There can be quite a few other valuableleadership lessonsfrom the ‘ideal’ man and the warrior prince Lord Rama, which can be imbibed by the military leaders of all the three wings of any defence organisation. Lord Rama as a leader was exceptional and led the way. The best way to create a positive work atmosphere is by leading through example and by ensuring that the team is highly motivated. This is exactly what Rama did with his threebrothers. As the eldest, he set an example for theyounger ones by always being fair and courteous yet stern when required. The whole of Ramayana is full of such examples, especially during the last leg of the Ramayana battle, Rama inspired his army to inculcate virtues like intelligence, skill, commitment, strategy to succeed. Lord Rama as leader was a participative leader and didn’t force his decisions upon others. Rama being a participative leader knew how to tackle situations with a cool-headed attitude and listen to others to encourage frank and open discussion on every aspect. Rama gives a patient hearing to advice from his allies while preparing for war against Ravana and thus, managed to extract valuable clues of Sita’s whereabouts. It is evident in Ramayana that Lord Rama inspired his army to fight an epic battle and be jubilant! He never forced his decision of leaving the palace for exile, not even on his own wife Sita and brother Laxman. Instead, he dissuaded both of them to stay in Ayodhya and let him proceed. Rama was a humble leader and followed ethics and a code of conduct. Lord Rama was a solicitous and a humble man. In fact, Rama declared his dedication to dharma when he offered Ravana a final chance to make peace on the battleground.[5] When Ravana walked to battle on the first day due to inadequate preparations and was rendered weaponless, Rama being a leader by ethics followed the code of chivalry during war and stipulated that an unarmed enemy should not be attacked. Humility was Rama’s most outstanding virtue, which made him so popular. He had no hesitation in eating the tasted fruits offered by Shabri during his exile. When Lord Rama finally reached Lanka, he welcomed Vibishana, the brother of his own enemy King Ravana to his side and embraced him like a brother. In spite of knowing that Vibishana was the brother of the demon King Ravana, he identified true and pure devotion and love. He welcomed him warmly and made him his best friend instantly in spite of some differenc es and arguments against this in his camp.Lord Rama being a humble leader, smiled and helped everyone to show genuine concern, and managed to fight a war on his own terms and conditions and finally win it. Rama was an unbiased leader. A leader has a personalised point of view which is exhibited in his own unique way. In Ramayana, Lord Rama shared his views and thought processes and opinions with Lakshmana, Hanumana, Sugriva and Vibheeshana. But that doesnt do any harm to anyone else. There was no prejudice against anyone as far as the king-subject relationship was concerned. It is a well-known fact that the Vanara sena (monkey army), proved to be one of the most essential links to win the epic battle. A leader also creates more leaders. Rama as a true leader in war believed in his army’s abilities and hence strengthened them as per the overall objective. Lord Rama helped Sugriva and Vibheeshana to establish their own kingdoms, similarly able military leaders should create and inspire effective potential leaders for the future. Rama was a leader having a clear vision. The mission of the army led by Lord Rama had a clear vision to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the Lanka king Ravana. This clarity of thoughts enabled the army to put their best to win the battle and finally achieve the positive desired outcome. Rama was a leader full of integrity. Lord Rama, despite his immense hardships and misfortune, never stepped aside from his chosen path. He always maintained a certain yardstick for himself and his team, thereby gaining big dividends in terms of achieving his ultimate goal. Rama was a learning leader. Rama kept himself under the guidance of the learned sages and ascetics, and frequently learned much about the nature of life. Significantly, he also learnt advanced techniques of archery and other techniques of warfare, which served him well during his final battle with the evil king Ravana. Rama was a role model and inspired everyone. Lakshmana, Rama’s younger brother, constantly looked up to his elder brother, and thus was willing to help him through all the challenges life threw at him. So all the military leaders should motivate their teams and continuously reward success and initiative. Rama was an understanding leader. It is evident in Ramayana that Rama was a true leader, as he understood the problems faced by his team members and thereby helped them in whichever ways he could. Like for instance, during his time spent in the forest he met Sugreeva who was abandoned by his own brother Bali. He then went ahead and helped Sugreeva in regaining his throne. In addition, he was instrumental in killing the demons that used to often regularly trouble the sages in the forest. APPLICATION OF LEADERSHIP TRAITS OF LORD RAMA IN A MILITARY ORGANISATION The above-mentioned leadership lessons as exhibited by Lord Rama in the epic Ramayana, if applied and implemented properly can form the basis of success of all types of organizations especially the military organization (Army, Air Force, Navy). Leadership in military is not just restricted to some handful of seniors with high-sounding titles, but permeates all across organizational levels managing personnel. It has been evident that a good leadership example like Lord Rama can enhance the overall motivational level and productivity in any military set-up. In the military scenario, one can succeed and many a battles can be won, if there is relevant knowledge for the same. Like Rama, military leaders have to be confident and show no signs of desperation. Military leaders have to be on top and keep a track of what is happening and gain full control of the war scenario. They should look confident and behave as one too, so that they are able to communicate to their subordinates that they are determined to extract positive outcomes for the benefit of their nation and their territory. The impact of an alert, agile and action-oriented leadership cannot be underestimated. A good military leader should ensure that his men give him a patient hearing and conduct themselves on the battleground to win the hardest of battles. This would allow his team to find a proper base ground and explore its full potential. Military Leadership believes in bearing the brunt most of the time and led the way through model behavior. Military leaders in particular are leaders with a vision, and have the ability to see and put into perspective what others cannot. Communicating this vision to their followers and motivating them to work towards fulfilling it, is an extended challenge for a military leader. The chief ingredients of good leadership as portrayed by Rama in Ramayana primarily are character, courage and competence, which undoubtedly form the essence of success for any military organization. Character, in military context, is understood as self-discipline, loyalty, readiness to accept responsibility, and willingness to sacrifice whenever required. These qualities of Lord Rama can help in minimizing fear and maximizing sound judgement in any critical military situation thereby bringing success from a seemingly hopeless situation. For a military leader humility is one of the most difficult trait to exhibit, especially during war time. However, there is no denying the fact that it is also one of the most fru itful traits if used in the correct direction. Moreover, a foreseen vision will always be a motivating factor to focus on the goal and not be deviated. Every military leader needs to have a clear vision of what he is aiming for and what will it bear him in the future.[6] He also must be in sync with his followers or team members in order to attain his goals. A military leader should avoid cutting corners and everything, which makes him uncomfortable. This will ensure long-term organizational sincerity and loyalty. Today’s world is all about dynamism and keeping pace with new developments, which surely is a tough challenge. In the current information age where knowledge is wealth, an informed modern military leader should constantly strive to learn, and explore new subjects, deepen the understanding of old ones, and continuously upgrade him. Keeping abreast of the latest developments and advancements in modern means of warfare is the need of the hour and is expected of all con temporary military leaders. Contemporary military environment requires leaders who can perceive what is right and know how to mobilize people and resources to accomplish mutual goals.[7] Understanding individual team members and ensuring the requirements to keep each one ticking, is what is required in our present day defence organization too. Leaders of the armed forces should back their teams under all circumstances. They should know how to deal with their subordinates in order to make many of the followers, leaders in their own right thereby creating options and opportunities for their subordinates to inculcate self-confidence and optimism. In today’s military world the one man show does not promise success like the earlier days. Intelligently distributed responsibility and empowerment creates changes for good and more chances to win. So naturally it becomes quintessential for every department, every unit in the armed forces to create more and effective leaders than ever before. It surely would ensure more uniqueness; more tasks completed, more projects concluded, more missions accomplished, more promises achieved and most of all more trust build than ever before. Neighbor’s Apartment

I didn’t have any second thoughts when my neighbor in the apartment invited me to come along and spend the night with his party celebration. It is at least two years now since the last time I joined one when my friend had a farewell party who was to leave out of the country. For such reason, being invited by my neighbor was a good chance for me to experience once again what it is like to get acquainted with people and celebrate a particular special moment in the celebrant’s life. My neighbor’s party was all about his successful promotion at work. He was once a sales agent for realty properties in a medium scale company in the city. He has worked for the company for about 10 years as a sales agent and was really very satisfied with his work and the amount of money he has been getting. Suddenly, he was promoted by the general manager as the new site supervisor. To celebrate such achievement, he threw a party in his apartment one night. Since we’ve known each other for about five years now, it was easy accepting his invitation. My neighbor invited his guests from different segments of his life background. All of the apartment’s tenants were supposedly invited but I saw only at least a few known neighbors present that night. Maybe some of the tenants had some other commitments or things to do for not attending the party. Apart from the neighbors, his office mates were also invited. A couple of them seem to have already worked for the company for a long time while some are still young professionals. Also, some of the party owner’s relatives were invited as I saw a few of his cousins and siblings at the living room. I’ve also known them in the past five years since they frequently visit my neighbor. Generally, the party was a very formal one in my opinion. The event provided a very good relaxing atmosphere for conversation and small talks in knowing acquaintances. There were no loud sounds but very smooth types of music were played the entire night. I didn’t see any children in the party. Also, the food was great with a whole set of catered meals and some light liquors. On a personal observation, my neighbor’s apartment seemed to me a little crowded in terms of fixtures. At the living room, some of his office stuffs were to be found only that they were set aside at the corners to provide more spaces for the guests. The furniture were also a bit old but were still comfortable especially the sofa. When I got a chance to go to the kitchen, it was really very small and cluttered compared to mine back home. The lighting for the entire unit was a little dim. This gloomy feel of the apartment was also enhanced by the pale colors of the walls which were at a brownish state of deterioration. The two windows of his room were also covered with dark colored curtains which used heavy fabrics. The unit’s atmosphere would have been hot during that night if not for an air conditioning unit. That equipment too seemed to be a very old one with some rusty parts in the control panel while the case was a bit yellowish. All of these factors simply provided a good impression that my neighbor’s unit was very old fashioned in terms of style. I just wondered if my neighbor’s earning were really at an optimum level before his promotion since I didn’t really saw improvements in his unit compared to the last time I went there. Even though my personal outlook of the unit was a little gloomy, I noticed that he has some very good appliances in his apartment. I thought the flat screen LCD TV in his living room was at least brand new. It really gave a very contrasting side on the situation of the unit’s atmosphere. He also has a state of the art music system just beside the television unit. It was a bit odd for such old apartment unit to see a complete home theater system more expensive than mine at a home.
